However, during the occupation of Italy, Allied troops turned to local cuisine to supplement their rations, leading to their discovery of pizza. The local bakers struggled to meet the high demand from US soldiers for pizza, and upon their return home after the war, these soldiers introduced their newfound love for pizza to their home country.
