Fun Fact

• Dosa is sometimes pronounced as "Do-Shh-Ah". When you spread the fermented rice batter on the frying pan/Tawa, you hear an "Shhh..." sound. You hear the same "Shhh..." sound when you flip the dosa to roast the other side.

• Dosa varieties have constantly been experimented with and when counted  there have been 624 varieties of Dosas!

Historical Fact

• According to historian P. Thankappan Nair, dosa originated in the Udupi town of present-day Karnataka. According to food historian K. T. Achaya, dosa (as dosai) was already in use in the ancient Tamil country around the 1st century AD. 

• Dosa has an interesting origin. It was called "dosha" meaning "sin". Deprived of alcohol, some Brahmin temple cooks thought they could get high on fermented rice. Kinda like sake. But their experiment failed. To salvage it one of them made fried crepes out of it". That almost sounds probable now, doesn't it?.
